MP pledges to deliver development to constituents

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Lawra in the Upper West Region, Mr Samson Abu, has promised to deliver development to and enhance the living standard of his constituents to justify the confidence they have reposed in him.

Spelling out his development agenda anchored on three priority areas, he pledged to vigorously tackle the education, health and water needs of the people of Lawra.

“Education is the bedrock of our development,” he told the Daily Graphic in an interview in Accra.

He said the three interventions, plus others, to be rolled out later in the course of his stewardship in Parliament would ultimately liberate the people from poverty.

Mr Abu said Lawra was not doing badly in the areas of education, health and water, “but there is the need to improve on them.”

As the immediate-past District Chief Executive (DCE) for Lawra, Mr Abu delivered enormous development projects to the people, making him one of the most successful DCE ever appointed in the district.

He promised to take the same dynamism and commitment he used to serve his constituents to Parliament in order to transform the living standards of the people of Lawra.

“My people chose me because they saw the work I did as DCE. My constituents see me as someone who is development-oriented,” he remarked.

The Lawra MP said as the major component of the development agenda, education delivery would be extended in the area by building more schools and giving incentives to parents to encourage them to send their children to school.

Mr Abu said he would work hard to ensure that the community-owned senior high school (SHS) at Brifo was absorbed by the government.

He said plans were underway to establish a teacher training college in Lawra, and promised to work hard towards bringing that initiative into fruition.

Mr Abu said during his tenure as DCE, the district assembly was able to remove many schools under trees by building many classroom blocks, leading to an increase in enrolment.

In the area of health, he promised to use his professional background as health service administrator to help address the health needs of the people.

He said a nursing training college had been established in Lawra, describing it as a milestone achievement.

He, however, stressed the need to do more for the people by providing more CHPS Compounds with the view to decongesting the district hospital and health centres in the district.

He said the CHPS Compounds would also go a long way to enhance community health outreach programmes.

Mr Abu said through contacts with some friends abroad, he had been able to raise funds for the building of a nutrition centre at the Lawra District Hospital.

On water, he dismissed the assertion by some people that Lawra had the widest water supply coverage in the area, and promised to ensure the provision of more boreholes for his constituents.

Mr Abu said one of the challenges facing the people was the lack of electricity, pointing out that the delivery of the Self Help Electrification Project (SHEP) was helping to address the problem.

“It’s a worry to us and I draw my inspiration from it and hope I will be able to help provide more electrification projects,” he said.
