'Mahama gives meaning to women empowerment'

President John MahamaThe Volta Regional Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Simon Amegashie-Viglo, has commended President John Mahama for giving true meaning to his promise of empowering and broadening the participation of women in politics.

“More of our women have been put in positions of trust and responsibility. We have four women in Parliament from the region, namely Juliana Azumah-Mensah for the Agotime-Ziope Constituency;  Helen Ntoso Krachi West and Eastern Regional Minister;  Dr Bernice Adiko, MP for Hohoe;  and Dela Sowah, MP for Kpando,” he enumerated.

Mr Amegashie-Viglo told the Daily Graphic   that “I think this is remarkable.

“Even more remarkable is the increase in the appointment of female municipal/district chief executives. The number has so far increased from one to five and we are still counting”.

The five female M/DCEs in the Volta Region are  Dr Margaret Kwaku for Hohoe;  Angela Alorwu-Tay for Afadzato-South; Fafa Agbai for North Tongu; Paulina Delali Adinyirah, MCE for Kpando;  and Mary Agbenyenu for Central Tongu.

Mr Amegashie-Viglo also said  that Madam Edith Akpoto was the Regional School Feeding Co-ordinator;  Jesse Ekumebu, the Regional head of GYEEDA, while Madam Evelyn Goni had been appointed as regional head of Non-Formal Education.

“We say congratulations to these women  and challenge them to use their positions to improve the  lives of our people through a multiplicity of social interventions,” he prayed.

He was elated about what he described as “striking achievement in Kpando and Hohoe, where we have a ‘double-do for our women. Both the MPs and MCEs are women,” and are  moving forward with our women and we trust that they will not disappoint us.”

The President, he observed, had finished nominating M/DCEs for the region but for some  areas where there were pending cases such as Nkwanta North, Krachi East, Kadjebi, Ho, Akatsi South and South Tongu.

Mr Amegashie-Viglo said in all those areas, consultations were still ongoing among stakeholders.

“We hope these cases would also be concluded pretty soon for the region to have its full complement of  municipal/district chief executives”, he added.
