Klottey Korley MP refurbishes dental clinic

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Klottey Korley Constituency, Nii Armah Ashitey, has refurbished the dilapidated Castle Road Dental Clinic at the cost of GHC80, 000.

He has also provided a dental chair and modern dental equipment to support the day-to-day running of the facility.

Nii Armah has subsequently handed over the facility, located at Adabraka, to the Osu Klottey Metropolitan Directorate of Health, whose officials have engaged the services of a resident dentist to manage the facility.

The facility which was built in 1960 by Dr Kwame Nkrumah was left to deteriorate, leaving only the first aid unit which is managed by a community health assistant.

Speaking at the handing over, the MP who also doubles as the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations said the project had become necessary since the sub-metro’s population of 132,768 people did not have access to dental care.

The situation, he said, had seen a surge in incidence of teeth decay among many people, while others have also developed gum diseases.

Nii Armah emphasised that increase in health accessibility which was a core theme that run through his election campaign motivated him to renovate the facility which was constructed in 1960.

While urging the staff of the clinic to develop good maintenance practices and manage their resource efficiently, Nii Armah was hopeful the facility would serve other people beyond the metropolis.

The Metro Director of Health Service, Dr Bright Davis-Teye, who commended the MP, announced that the facility would be opened to the general public as well as people on the national health insurance.

“We intend to embark on an outreach programme to educate people on the need to access dental health care, since the facility has come in handy  in that direction”, he said.

Dr Teye urged members of the public who hold NHIS cards and are in dire need of dental care to voluntarily visit the clinic to be attended to.
