Kadjebi PWDs receive working tools, start-up capitals

The Kadjebi District Assembly in the Oti Region has presented working tools, equipment, items and materials valued at GH¢102,530.00 to 60 Persons Living With Disabilities (PWDs) in the district to help them start businesses.

The items include fridges, cassava mills, pepper grinders, cutlasses, shaping machines, spraying machines, sewing machines, among others.

The assembly also presented cheques totalling GH¢3,200 to six disabled students who had gained admission to tertiary institutions to pay their fees.

Presenting the items to the beneficiaries at Kadjebi, the District Chief (DCE), Mr Maxwell Kofi Asiedu, said the items were bought from the assembly’s three per cent share of the District Assemblies’ Common Fund (DACF) allocation to the PWDs to support them to enhance their social image via dignified labour.

Achieving SDG 1

Mr Asiedu reiterated the government’s commitment to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 1 on the eradication of poverty through enhancement of social images of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs).

He said the government would at all levels safeguard and improve the living conditions of PWDs by releasing the PWDs’ share of the DACF on time and also make sure that the fund was utilised for the intended purpose.

He said disability issues were important issues all over the world and, therefore, needed the support and concern of everyone.

Mr Asiedu also advised the beneficiaries to take stock of their proceeds and also open banks accounts to lodge their monies.

Demand-driven disbursements

The District Coordinating Director, Mr Abdul-Aziz Jafaru, said the disbursement was done on demand-driven basis and asked the beneficiaries to handle the items with outmost care.

Mr Jafaru admonished them to use the items for their intended purposes to better their living standards since there would be follow-up checks on the items given.

He urged others who were yet to receive theirs to exercise patience while assuring them that theirs would come later.

Handle PWDs with care

The Kadjebi District Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Mr Isaac Rockson Klu, called on all able-bodied persons to handle the PWDs with outmost care since any able-bodied person could also become disabled at any time.

Ms Alhassan Abiba, one of the beneficiaries, thanked the government for the support and promised to use the items for their intended purposes.

She also advised PWDs to learn a trade to be economically and financially independent.
