Subin: Aggrieved NPP members accuse MP Eugene Antwi of 'nepotism and favouritism'

The timely intervention of the police prevented some aggrieved party members from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Subin constituency in Kumasi from locking up the party office at Asafo on Tuesday.

The aggrieved party members accused the sitting Member of Parliament, Mr Eugene Boakye Antwi and the constituency executives of "nepotism and favouritism."

The aggrieved members accused the MP of conniving with the party executives, to change the Subin constituency delegates register ahead of the primary to elect a new candidate for the party heading towards the December 2020 parliamentary election.

They accused them of inserting names of their preferred delegates and living out “those of us who toiled and worked hard for the party to come to power.”

According to them, since 2017, the national headquarters of the party has been sending Christmas packages in form of cash to be distributed to the delegates in the constituency, however, they said because the MP has sidelined them, they have never benefited from it.

They said last December, the same thing happened and the party in the constituency has again clandestinely shared the money but “this time, we won't let sleeping dogs to lie and have come with our own padlocks to lock up the office until we got our share of the money.”

Wearing red armbands with placards some of which red, ‘Eugene Must Go’, ‘We Want Our Money’ and holding chains and padlocks, the ‘demonstrators’ tried to lock up the party office but were stopped by the police who were called in to provide security.

This led to the aggrieved party members abandoning their mission, reports Graphic Online's Kumasi reporter, Kwadwo Baffoe Donkor.

Reaction

However, in an interview with the constituency Secretary, Mr Akuamoah Boateng, he said the demonstrators had no case and denied all their allegations.

He said most of the people making the allegations were polling station executives and coordinators who have been suspended by the party.

According to him, “all the delegates deserving of the package have been sorted out.”

He said those making the allegations have been suspended for various offences and they have been duly served with their suspension letters and “Once you are suspended, you forfeit all your benefits.”

Mr Boateng said they were taken through the party disciplinary procedures and some of them admitted their offences and apologised.

According to him, the party only implemented the recommendations of the disciplinary committee that sat on their cases.

He said the party is not perturbed by their demonstrations and "superfluous allegations."
