Committee to promote peaceful elections in Madina inaugurated

The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in collaboration with the assembly has inaugurated a 10-member Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) to promote a peaceful 2024 elections with assurance from the committee that they would discharge their duties without fear or favour.

 The members include the Madina Divisional Police Commander, ASP Precious Agbenorwu, Municipal Director of Electoral Commission (EC), Lilian Oye Asare; La Nkwantanang- Madina NCCE Director, Doris Agyeman who also doubles as the secretary to the committee; La Nkwantanang Traditional Council representative, and Nicholas Nikoi Ashie, representative of the Madina Zongo Chief.

Others are Zico Abubakar, National Democratic Congress (NDC) representative; Justice Tengey, New Patriotic Party (NPP) representative; Tudah Ayisah, representative of the National Youth Authority (NYA); Juliana Gyamfi, the women’s groups representative, Felicia Sosu, and the Chairperson of the committee, Rev. Mrs Comfort Leticia Adjei-Yeboah.

Role

At the inauguration of the committee last Tuesday, the La Nkwantanang- Madina NCCE Director, Mrs Agyeman, tasked the committee to help monitor and resolve cases that might create tension and lead to violence in the constituency.

These, she said, included defacing of posters, the use of intemperate language for campaigning, fake news (misinformation and disinformation), religious and ethnic differences.

She said the IPDC which has been established at the regional and district levels to foster peaceful elections and ensure political stability in the country, served as a platform for dialogue and collaboration among political parties, stakeholders and citizens to address electoral concerns, promote tolerance and mitigate potential conflicts.

The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Director of the EC,  Oye Asare, who took them through the mandate of the commission and the preparations made so far towards the upcoming elections, expressed the commitment of the EC to ensure credible, free and transparent polls.

Justice/fairness

The incumbent NDC Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xaxier Sosu, called on the EC to ensure that it discharged its mandate for this upcoming election with justice and fairness for the country to continue to enjoy the prevailing peace in the nation.

Creditable performance        

The La Nkwantanang-Madina MCE, Jennifer Dede Adjabeng, who inaugurated the committee, charged them to ensure it performed creditably in the constituency for peace to prevail before, during and after the elections.

The Chairperson of the committee, Rev. Mrs Adjei-Yeboah, gave an assurance that the committee would perform its mandate by educating the people in the various communities in the constituency “so as to maintain the peace we want as a constituency and a country”.
