Expel members opposed to President’s nominees -NDC man

Mr Bismark Tawiah Boaten, Eastern Regional NDC OrganiserThe Eastern Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Bismark Tawia Boateng, has suggested to the leadership of the party to dismiss any member, especially government appointees in the assemblies who kick against the President’s nominees for the position of metropolitan, municipal and district chief (MMDCEs).

Under the Constitution, the President has to nominate one person for such a position to be confirmed through voting by assembly members, 30 per cent of whom are government appointees.

Such nominees are required to obtain two-thirds of the votes for the position and the process has just started in some parts of the country, with some of the MMDCEs confirmed, while others have been rejected.

According to Mr Tawia Boateng, it had been the habit of some members of the NDC, especially government appointees in the assemblies to openly campaign against the confirmation of the President’s nominees.

He said such a situation did not augur well for the party since it was directly against the President who should be supported by party members in choosing metropolitan/municipal/district/political heads.

Mr Tawia Boateng pointed out that the delay in the confirmation of MMDCEs who could not clear the hurdle in the first balloting and had to be considered at a later date, had negative impacts on the political entities they were to administer.

That, he explained, was due to the inability of such districts or municipalities to execute development projects on time.

Mr Tawia Boateng, therefore, was of the view that any member of the party who either campaigned or opposed the President’s nominees should be expelled from the party.

That, to him, would serve as an example for party members to refrain from such practices.

“Most often, it is members of the party who apply but fail in their bids for such a position that campaign against the confirmation of the President’s nominees and such persons should be expelled from the party”.
