Ekumfi district fails to endorse President's nominee

The President’s quest for the approval of his nominations for the position of chief executives for the smooth running of the assemblies in the Central Region suffered another jolt when members of the newly created Ekumfi District failed to endorse Mr Ibrahim Kweku Dawson at its sitting last Wednesday.

Mr Dawson, however, has a second chance within 10 days to face the members in another round of voting for his approval as he polled 20 votes, representing 50 per cent of the total votes cast, with 17 voting against him.

This is not the first time assemblies in the region have failed to endorse the president’s nominee.

Two weeks ago, the Assin North District Assembly rejected Mr Antwi Boasiako. Although its counterpart in the south also failed to approve Mrs Sabina Appiah-Kubi’s nomination, they gave her a second chance to vie for the seat within 10 days.

Last week, members of the Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa and the Ajumako- Enyan-Essiam district assemblies also fell short of giving approval to their district chief executives and left their fate hanging in the balance for another round of voting. Both Mr Adom Botwey and Mr Light Koomson fell short of three votes to secure their approval.

The Central Regional Minister, Mr Samuel Sarpong, who could not hide his disappointment at the turn of events at Essarkyir (after the voting), described the action of the assembly members as sad and a reflection of the selfish interest on the part of some members of the assembly.

Mr Sarpong said he had expected the members to vote overwhelmingly to endorse the nominee to champion the quest of the chiefs and people in the area for development.

He stressed the need for unity among the people, the chiefs and the assembly members as an expression of appreciation for being given the opportunity to take their destiny into their own hands with the creation of the new district.

Mr Dawson, who looked calm and composed after the voting, advised his supporters not to engage in name calling but continue to rally behind him for his approval the next time round.

He commended members of the assembly and all those who supported him and urged them to give him the nod in order to bring the needed development to the area.

Coach Bashiru Hayford of Ashanti Goldfields Football Club, who hails from Ekumfi Ekrowful in the district also advised the assembly members to reconsider their positions and vote for Mr Dawson during the next approval.
