Disregard Wereko-Brobby; he’s not a member of NPP – Sir John

Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, General Secretary of NPPThe General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has asked the party’s followers to disregard utterances by Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby with regards to the election petition currently pending at the Supreme Court.

On Thursday, Dr Wereko Brobby released a press statement titled, “On the face of the pink sheets or at the heart of the matter” in which he scolded the petitioners in the ongoing presidential election petition for using Dr Mahamudu Bawumia whom he described as a “clueless witness” to prosecute their case.

Reacting, Mr Owusu Afriyie said Dr Wereko-Brobby has ceased to be a member of the NPP and because he was “ashamed of the disgrace that awaits him following his criticism of the decision of the party to opt for the election petition, coupled with the revelations coming up at the hearing had resorted to press statements to belittle the NPP’s efforts”.

The General Secretary of the NPP who was speaking on Accra based radio station, Asempa FM said the ex-Volta River Authority (VRA) boss should be mindful that he was not the only ”scholar” who could resort to issuing of press statements and that he (Owusu Afriyie) was going to read the entire statement and respond to it appropriately.

Dr Wereko-Brobby has on numerous occasions received bashings from members of the NPP on his views that the party was complicit in its own defeat at the 2012 general elections.

In the press statement issued Thursday he said the failure by the NPP to fall on a witness who was versed with the intricacies of the election procedures may well be a decision to rue when final judgment was given by the judges.

He also said the petitioners only clutched on to mere "assertions, superstitions, personal interpretations of law" whereas the witness on the other side, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia of the National Democratic Congress was "masterful" in his act.

But Mr Owusu Afriyie, who is also known as ‘Sir John’ in his reaction maintained that the opposite of Dr Wereko-Brobby’s views was what was happening in court.

He said the party would reply him with equal measure at the appropriate time.

“Who does he think he is? If he is the nephew of Victor Owusu and so what. J.A. Kufuor has been President and his nephews will not behave in same manner”, Owusu Afriyie fumed.

He said leaders in the party would not behave in a similar manner and that Wereko-Brobby should be mindful that he was not a leader in the party and was no more even a member of the party.

Mr Owusu Afriyie said many of the woes the NPP was going through currently "were as a result of people like Dr Wereko-Brobby".

Dr Wereko-Brobby on his part has maintained that he has not quit the NPP and remains a staunch member of the party.
