Arrest leaders of ‘Let my vote count’ group - Young Democrats

Young Democrats-Ghana, a Pro-National Democratic Congress group, has called on the Police to arrest any individual or group who are bent on disturbing the peace, stability and security of the country.

They called on the acting IGP, as a matter of urgency, to arrest and prosecute the leadership of “Let my vote count” group and Mr Owusu Bempah for threatening social peace and the lives of Supreme Court Judges.

At a press conference in Accra, Mr Sam Atukwei Quaye, the convenor of the group, said “we are witnesses to the latest outburst by one of the leaders of the ‘Let my vote count’ group, that the NPP leadership should allow them to throw bombs, destroy schools and kill people, in their quest to make the international community see their intent in ensuring that the December electoral verdict is reversed in their favour.”

Mr Quaye said the police should equally arrest Mr Omari Wadie as a possible suspect for the bomb planted at the National Bureau of Communication which was defused due to the timely intervention of the bomb squad of the Ghana Armed Forces.

He said it was important for the police to act quickly because since 2011 several violent electoral incidents which had been reported remained unresolved and that the current activities of some individuals portray a disturbing agenda which could affect the stability of the country.

Mr Quaye said before the December election, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party, made statements like, the election was an “All die be die” affair.

He said such inflammatory slogans led some supporters of the NPP in the Ashanti Region to invade and ‘petrol-bomb’ the house of Dr Opuni and also resulted in the near-lynching of Mr Alfred Mahama, brother of the President, at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Kumasi by thugs organised by Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the Member of Parliament for Asokwa.

Mr Quaye said the Young Democrats were reliably informed of attempts by some aggrieved members of the NPP to attack and possibly eliminate Dr Charles Wereko Brobbey, Dr Kojo Afari Gyan, Electoral Commissioner and Professor Emmanuel Asante, Chairman of the Peace Council.

“The Young Democrats are ready to assist the police with more information and wish to demand for a 24-hour protection for the said individuals since their lives are in danger,” he said.

Mr Quaye said the group would have no option but to mobilise well-meaning youth of the country to demonstrate against the police and the NPP if they failed to respond appropriately to ensure that the peace and security of the country was sustained. -GNA
