World Radiography day celebrated in Accra

World Radiography day was last Thursday celebrated in Accra with a call on government and the Allied health professional council to engage law enforcement agencies to get rid of health facilities and imaging centres who are not qualified to provide radiography services.

Mr. Prince Rockson, the president of the Ghana society of radiographers who made the call said, authorities and owners of radiological facilities should stop engaging unqualified persons to operate clinical radiological installation, since it was against the law to practice without being registered.

This year’s event was on the theme “Precision and compassion: Radiographers qualities” and was aimed at creating awareness and promoting the profession as a viable and specialized career.

Mr. Rockson said quality control ensures that, radiographic images are of the best quality and are administered at the lowest possible dose of radiation to patients and ensure precise ultrasound reports.

Mr Rockson said the effort of radiographers may be thwarted by equipment and accessories that have not been subjected to appropriate regime of quality control checks.

Mr. Lawrence Arthur, a retired lecturer of the department of Radiography of the University of Ghana, expressed worry about absence of governing board to oversee the regulation and training of 17 Allied health professions for over two years after it has been dissolved.

He appealed to government to intervene to streamline the sector to function effectively.
