According to him, the country was open for business as transparency was at the centre of various initiatives and reforms being undertaken by the Nana Akufo-Addo government.

Those, he said, included the abolition of 15 ‘nuisance taxes’ in the 2017 budget statement, as well as the introduction of a paperless port system and an online registration for new businesses.

Delegation

The Vice-President gave the assurance when he led a delegation to visit the Ajman Ruler’s Court and the Gulf Medical University (GMU), Ajman – the leading private medical university in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The Emirate of Ajman is one of the seven city states of the UAE.

The delegation included the First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo, senior government officials, as well as officials of the Consulate of Ghana in Dubai.

Training

In separate interactions with His Highness, Sheikh Humaid Bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council of the UAE and Ruler of Ajman, and other officials of Ajman, Dr Bawumia and Mrs Akufo-Addo outlined a number of areas for mutual cooperation between Ghana and Ajman, which included the training of Ghanaian medical personnel and the establishment of medical facilities in Ghana.

The delegation was later conducted round the Gulf Medical University (GMU)’s educational and research facilities, the medical centres on the campus, as well as ongoing projects of the hospitals.

Speaking after the tour, Vice-President Bawumia said the delegation was “very impressed with what we have seen here.

We are happy that many Ghanaian students are pursuing their medical education at GMU.

“We hope to see this remarkable model of health care, medical education and research replicated in Ghana.”

Campus in Ghana

The Founder and President of the Board of Trustees of the GMU, which is owned and operated by the Thumbay Group, Mr Thumbay Moideen, disclosed that the GMU was in the process of establishing campuses in three other countries, including Ghana.

The Vice-President is in the UAE to participate in the ongoing Global Business Forum Africa taking place in Dubai.

He returns to Accra today, November 3, 2017.
