Dansoman residents benefit from free health screening

More than 300 residents of Dansoman, in the Ablekuma West Constituency, last Saturday benefited from a health screening exercise organised by Mobile Health Care Ghana (MOHEC), a non-governmental organisation that focuses on quality healthcare delivery.

The beneficiaries, who were of different age groups, were screened for various health conditions, including hepatitis, syphilis, malaria, blood and glucose content levels.

Some of the beneficiaries, who were identified as suffering from malnutrition, were counselled on good diet and also given some food supplements.

The beneficiaries were also educated on healthy lifestyles that would enable them to avoid diseases such as diabetes and hypertension, among others.

Why the exercise

In an interaction with the Daily Graphic, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MOHEC, Mrs Matilda Sasu, who is a midwife at the Dansoman Polyclinic, said the exercise was organised as part of efforts to ensure quality healthcare delivery.

"Due to infrastructural and logistics challenges in most health facilities, access to quality health care has become a problem and that is why MOHEC has decided to assist in that direction," she said.

Healthy lifestyle

Mrs Sasu said regular medical checkup was part of a healthy lifestyle.

She said most members of the public were ignorant of their health status, and that situation often resulted in disease complications and the resultant high cost of treatment or loss of lives in the long run.

She cautioned that the cost of ignoring a healthy lifestyle could sometimes be huge, adding, "just imagine what would happen if a driver who does not know that he suffers from high blood pressure suffers a cardiac arrest in his line of work."

Mrs Sasu, therefore, appealed to the public to make their health a priority, just as they treated their work and its related matters.

Some of the beneficiaries the Daily Graphic interacted with after the exercise said they were very appreciative for having had the chance to be screened for certain diseases, as well as having been educated on healthy lifestyle and urged MOHEC to continue with its good work.
