Health Centre inaugurated at Wantugu

A health facility has been constructed for the people of Wantugu and surrounding communities in the Tolon District in the Northern Region.

The GH¢275,000 health centre consists of an out-patients department (OPD), labour, children, male and female wards, a dispensary and an ante-natal section.

The project was constructed by the Baptist Child Development Programme (BCDP), with funding from Christian Children's Fund of Canada, both child-centred non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and the Tolon District Assembly.

With the inauguration of the facility, the people of Wantugu and surrounding communities will no longer have to rely on quack doctors or travel long distances to access health care, a situation which sometimes results in the deaths of patients and especially pregnant women.

Rationale

The Programme Leader of BCDP, Reverend Thomas Sayibu, said the provision of the clinic was based on a needs assessment to enable the people to access quality healthcare at their doorstep.

He commended all partners for their various contributions towards the success of the project.

The Country Director of the CCFC, Mr George Baiden, advised the people to live healthy lifestyles by avoiding junk foods, keeping their surroundings clean and practising personal hygiene.

The Tolon District Director of Health Service, Ms Charity Azantilow, also entreated the people to utilise the facility by patronising it for their medical care, saying “you should not always stay at home till your sickness develops into complications before rushing to the centre for help.”

Ms Azantilow also appealed to the assembly to complete a nurses quarters that was under construction near the clinic to enable health personnel to provide prompt services for the people.

Significance

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Tolon, Hajia Balchisu Yakubu, said the health centre would serve 12 communities in the district with a population of more than 12,000.

According to her, the assembly would further support the health directorate to help improve on the conditions of the people by constructing Community-based Health Planning Services (CHPS) compounds in all the electoral areas in the district.

The DCE also gave an assurance that the assembly would complete work on nurses’ quarters in the area to provide accommodation for health workers posted to the clinic.

For his part, the Kasul-Lana ( the Chief of Kasul-yili), Yakubu Alhassan, who presides over the area, expressed gratitude to their benefactors for the construction of the clinic.
