FDA opens mini-laboratory at Tema port

A mini-laboratory to ascertain the quality and safety of products before being allowed into the market has been inaugurated at the Tema Fishing Harbour.

The facility, put together by the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), is part of efforts aimed at ensuring that healthy products get to the market.

The FDA per the Public Health Act, Act 851, has a responsibility to ensure that all food, drugs, cosmetics, medical devices, household chemicals and tobacco products either locally manufactured or imported are of good quality and safe for users.

The establishment of the mini-laboratory at the port, which will be using quick test methods to randomly test sampled products is to help facilitate trade at the Tema Port and fast-track the clearing of products.

Speaking at an event to officially open the laboratory, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the FDA, Mrs Delese Mimi Darko said over the years, the FDA has come under intense criticism about how activities at the ports are carried out.

She said based on those criticisms, coupled with the introduction of the paperless system as well as the joint inspection management information system at the port, the number of consignments inspected by the FDA at the port has increased.

She said the laboratory, which will be manned by competent technical staff, will randomly be testing sampled regulated products to ascertain their quality and safety before being allowed into the market.
