ECOWAS conference on blood transfusion opens in Accra

The 3rd ECOWAS Regional Conference of the Africa Society for Blood Transfusion (AfSBT) will take place in Accra on 19 and 20th November, 2018 on the theme: “Voluntary Unpaid Blood Donation: Requirement for Quality Health System”.

The two-day conference will be co-presented by the ECOWAS Regional Executives of the AfSBT in collaboration with the National Blood Service (NBS), and the Ghana Haematology Society, under the auspices of the Ministry of Health, Ghana.

Participants are expected to share knowledge and information from their respective countries on blood transfusion, relevant to the African region.

There will be oral and poster presentation of scientific papers from participants across the region.

The presentations will largely be based on transfusion practice along the blood safety value chain.

As a body, AfSBT’s mission is to advocate the highest ethical and professional standards and skills in blood transfusion practitioners across the African continent. It is also aimed at ensuring well-coordinated National Blood Programme in participating countries.

Ghana becomes the second country within the ECOWAS sub-region to host the Regional Conference, after Nigeria hosted the first and second editions.

A chairperson of the Local Organising Committee (L.O.C) Mrs Mavis Okyere, who is also the Head of Quality at the National Blood Service, says it is expected that at the end of the meeting, participants from member countries within the ECOWAS Region will foster unity to become stronger, vibrant and interactive.

Mrs Okyere says she believes when the regions become stronger the AfSBT will become very active in promoting effective blood transfusion services.

The 3rd ECOWAS Regional Conference of the Africa Society for Blood Transfusion (AfSBT), which will take place at the plush Labadi Beach Hotel, will be attended by haematologists, medical laboratory scientists, medical doctors, blood transfusion practitioners, blood donors, and other professionals, as well as people in academia.
