ZONTA International Accra II adopts female ward at Korle Bu
ZONTA International Accra II, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), has officially adopted the Chinaard Ward of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH).
To that effect, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between representatives of the NGO and the department in Accra.
As part of the agreement, Zonta International Accra II will provide support to the ward for the next 10 years.
It is also required of the department to involve the NGO in taking decisions on the management of the ward.
Renovation works worth ¢220,000 have begun on the project that is expected to be completed by the end of March this year.
The 40-bed-capacity project is in collaboration with Australian Aid and GCB Bank of Ghana.
The Chinaard Ward, which is a female ward, takes care of cancer, obstetric fistula and abortion cases.
The Head of the Gynaecology and Obstetrics Department, Dr Ali Samba, noted that the ward had over the years, improved upon its operations, especially in carrying out abortions.
According to him, the recovery rate of patients at the ward had also improved.
“Techniques have been developed to the extent that the complication rate is much, much lower. So the picture of Chinaard years ago is different now,” he stated.
A member of the organisation, Mrs Nana Oforiwaa Koranteng, explained that they were motivated to support ailing women in the ward.
“One of us came here sometime ago and realised that the place was deplorable. And women who come here are women with cases of cancer and other terminal issues. So we decided to adopt and support it because you never know who will end up here,” she said.
Zonta International is a global organisation that has 1,200 clubs with 30,000 members in 66 countries.
With the help of its members, who are women professionals, the organisation seeks to empower women worldwide through service and advocacy.
