Wedding gifts thief arrested

Emelia Appiah, the alleged thief

A woman, believed to have specialised in the act of robbing newly wedded couples of their monetary gifts, has been arrested.Emelia Appiah, a 23-year-old resident of Kasoa in the Central Region, was apprehended last Saturday when she attempted to escape with gift envelopes meant for a couple at Dansoman.

After stealing the envelopes from the event grounds at Mother’s Inn at Dansoman, she was spotted by a close friend to her previous victim, leading to her arrest.

Briefing journalists in Accra yesterday, the Cantonments District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Mr Alex Kumantani, said Ms Appiah often introduced herself as a relative to the groom at the reception and offered to be in-charge of the gifts table.

Once she received the envelopes, Mr Kumantani said Ms Appiah, who is currently four months pregnant, would then replace them with already sealed empty ones which she kept in her bag.

According to him, immediately the floor was open for the guests to dance, Ms Appiah, would give an excuse of visiting the washroom and then escape.

Narrating the circumstances leading to her arrest, Mr Kumantani said Ms Appiah, on April 20, this year, went to the wedding reception of a staff of VIP Transportation Company in Accra.

After she had introduced herself to some of the relatives of the bride as a member of the groom’s family, he said Ms Appiah asked to be in-charge of the gifts table and was allowed.

After the reception, the groom, identified as Mr Eric Botwe, went for the envelopes only to realise that the envelopes given to him were empty.

On August 17, this year, Mr Kumantani said, Ms Salomey Boamah, the lady who was assigned to the gift table with Ms Appiah on her friend’s wedding, spotted her at another friend’s wedding.

He said Ms Boamah raised an alarm, leading to Ms Appiah’s arrest.

After interrogation, Mr Kumantein said Ms Appiah admitted to the offence.

She is currently in the custody of the Cantonments police, awaiting further investigation.

As of the time of filing this report, three victims had identified Ms Appiah as robbing them of their wedding gifts.
