We can't afford to leave our stomachs in the hands of others - Prez Mahama

President John Mahama has reiterated that agriculture remains a priority of his government because Ghanaians must achieve food security rather than leave their stomachs in the hands of others.

He said the need for food security is must, more so when God has been gracious enough to bless the nation with a lot of arable lands with which to produce food.

President Mahama who was speaking on Saturday when he joined the chiefs and people of Kworli-Nakpali in the Zabzugu District of the Northern Region to inaugurate the Kworli Area Farmers and Fishermen Association (KAFAFA), promised the support of the government for farmers to enable them produce enough food to feed the country.

He said a major obstacle to food production in Ghana has been the inability to organize farmers into associations and co-operatives whereas every country that has progressed because of agriculture have done so because they have formed farmer-based organisations which makes it easier for their governments to reach them with critically needed inputs and support for increased production.
 
Formed in 2012 and with a membership of about 35,000 across some 50 communities in the Zabzugu, Nanumba South and the Tatale Districts, KAFAFA, an initiative of the Paramount Chief of the Kowrli Area Communities, the Gbulga Lana, Chief Mohammed Dawuda Jawara, is bringing together the farmers to be able to access assistance and support, and also encourage members to adopt improved modern farming and fishing technologies.  Listen to the president in the audio
