Two killed in Alavanyo-Dzogbefeme shooting

Two persons were on Sunday killed following a crossfire shooting incident between some military men and the youth of Alavanyo Dzogbefeme in the Volta Region.

The Volta Regional Police Commander, Mr Ebenezer Doku, who confirmed the death of the two the incident happened after the youth of the community allegedly opened fire on the military unprovoked, compelling the soldiers to return fire.

According to him, the military went to the community to "negotiate" with the chief to appeal to the youth to release a weapon they seized from a police officer they attacked hours earlier.

The Commander said before the negotiation started, the military men realised that the youth had cut electricity to the community and started shooting from bushes.

He said the exchange of fire resulted in the death of the two and injury of about eight persons.

Mr Doku said the youth earlier attacked a police operation team that was in the area after it picked intelligence of piled up arms in the community.

He said the youth encircled the team, hit one on the forehead and seized his weapon after his colleagues retreated.

The Commander said the team made a report to the Kpando Police, which informed the military about the incident and the need to help retrieve the weapon.

Meanwhile, the Regional Security Council has sent a high powered delegation to the area after an emergency meeting on Monday.
