Two-hour rainfall floods portions of Koforidua

Nearly two hours of rainfall in Koforidua last Wednesday exposed the poor drainage system in parts of the municipality as a number of houses and shops were flooded by the rain water.

Areas such as Nsukwao and Zongo were the worst affected.

Gridlock

The rains, which started at about 3:10 p.m. and subsided only a few minutes to 4 p.m., also caused a heavy gridlock on roads leading to the central business district (CBD) of the town.

The congestion, uncharacteristic of Koforidua, had motorists, particularly commercial drivers who were moving in and out of the CBD in the peak hours of the evening, spending about 30 minutes on trips that usually took only seven to 10 minutes.

Residents’ reaction

Some residents expressed concern about the situation and attributed it to the small sizes of drains in the town that were unable to collect the volumes of rainwater and also because other drains in the town were choked.

At about 5:30 p.m. however, the flood had receded and shop owners and residents who were affected were counting their losses. They spent long hours to clear pools of water that entered their rooms and shops.
