Togbe Afede crowned Man of the Year at EMY Awards

The Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State, Togbe Afede XIV, has been crowned the Overall Man of the Year at this year’s EMY Awards in Accra.

He won the ultimate Man of the Year/Supremo Flagship Award for his contributions to society, the economy, and his leadership of the chieftaincy institution.

The Exclusive Men of the Year (EMY) event is organised by Fathers’ Day and seeks to celebrate distinguished men and women in Ghana and across the continent who have distinguished themselves and impacted the society.

Togbe Afede

An investment banker with experience spanning over 20 years, Togbe Afede XIV is the founder and co-founder of many companies, including Ghana’s largest domestic and regional airline — Africa World Airline (AWA).

He is a member of the Council of State and also served as Chairman of the Economic Team during the political transition in 2009.

Togbe Afede also served as a member of the President’s Economic Advisory Council from 2009 to 2012 and served on the board of the Bank of Ghana for 10 years. He is currently the Chairman of World Trade Centre, Accra.

Awardees

“This is one award scheme that wants to motivate men, both young and old, that they can be more than just men. It serves as an avenue for men to move out of their comfort zones and become agents of change,” the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Fathers’ Day, Mr Kojo Soboh, said.

Other awardees included the former presidential candidate of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr Ivor Greenstreet, who won the Man of the Year — Courage; Mr Mike Amon-Kwafo emerged Man of the Year — Communications & Events Development; Mr Nicholas Bortey emerged Man of the Year — Technology, with Dr Moses De-Gaulle Dogbatsey picking up the Man of the Year honours in the health category.

Also given awards were Mr Kofi Amoa-Abban, Man of the Year — Oil & Gas; Mr Kweku Bediako of Chocolate Clothing, the Fashion Designer of the Year; Okyeame Kwame, Man of the Year — Style; Kuami Eugene, Discovery of the Year, with Stonebwoy being named the Man of the Year — Entertainment, while boxer, Isaac Dogboe won the Man of the Year — Sports.

The Special Woman of the Year award went to Mrs Grace Amey-Obeng, Founder and CEO of FC Group of Companies, with Prof. J. H. Kwabena Nketia receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to the creative arts industry.

Award

Instituted by Fathers’ Day, the EMY Awards was held in a glamorous dinner setting, with remarkable performances from some highlife and hiplife greats such as Trigmatic, Daddy Lumba and Nigeria’s Simi.

It was also graced by special guests of honour including former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings; president of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA), Bice Osei Kufuor aka Obour; the Minister of Tourism, Arts & Culture, Ms Catherine Afeku, and boxing legend, Azumah Nelson.
