They are the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), German International Development Ghana (GIZ) and GCNET. GIZ donated a cheque for GHc¢15,000, the GRA and GCNET each offered GH¢ 4,000.

Speaking at the launch of the celebration in Accra, the Director of the National Cardiothoracic Centre (NCTC) at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH), Dr Lawrence Agyeman Sereboe, said the theme for the 2013 celebration would focus on a life-course approach to the prevention and control of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), with special emphasis on women and children.

According to Dr Sereboe, since CVD could affect people of all ages and population groups, there was the need for women to be educated on the disease.

Meanwhile, he has advised the public against bad eating habits such as excessive intake of fatty foods, sugar and salt which could pose a danger to their hearts.

Dr Sereboe particularly mentioned tobacco use, obesity, and physical inactivity as major factors of heart diseases which “are on a high trend in the country”.

The Founder of the Ghana Heart Foundation, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong Boateng, thanked the three organisations for their support.

He expressed concern over poor eating habit among the population, particularly as it was detrimental to health.

He said one of the major reasons people were dying young, ageing, growing weaker and performing poorly at work was the bad eating habits they had adopted.

An Accra-based radio show host at Adom FM, Joyce Ekuma Mama Zimbi, was announced as the Brand Ambassador for this year’s world heart day celebration.
