Tema General Hospital conducts diabetes screening for Ecobank staff

The Tema General Hospital Thursday organised a free diabetes and hypertension screening for staff of the Spintex Road branch of Ecobank Ghana.

The Medical Director of the Tema General Hospital, Dr Charity Sarpong, disclosed that the exercise is to fulfil the mandate of the hospital in delivering a comprehensive health service to the public and other corporate bodies within the community.

She said the exercise was also to commemorate World Diabetes Day.

Dr Sarpong said the exercise was used to create awareness on the causes, management, and prevention of diabetes and to encourage the public to undertake regular and periodic medical examination, which could help them to know their blood sugar level.

She asked the Ecobank staff to adopt a healthy lifestyle that would help to reduce the high rate of diabetes ailment in the country.

Speaking at the program, Dr Akosua Asante Asamani, a medical expert, also advised them not to indulge in self-medication or adopt the habit of combining hospital medication with traditional herbal treatment in an attempt to cure diabetes.

Dr Asamani noted that blurred vision, weight loss, fatigue, and slow healing of wound are symptoms of diabetes.

She added that these could damage the blood vessel and the kidney of the human body.

Blood lipid control, she said, is another measure used to check the regulation cholesterol level to maintain a healthy body.
