Tarkwa: Residents block road to protest bad roads

Some residents of Tarkwa in the Western Region have blocked the main Tarkwa-Obuasi highway in a protest over bad roads in the area.

Graphic Online's Timothy Ngnenbe reports from Tarkwa that there is confusion as the youth burn lorry tyres, chant and prevent cars from moving.

According to them, they have the blessing of the chiefs and local opinion leaders to stage this demonstration because mining communities in the area have been denied of the benefit of the resource for far too long.

They are determined to continue with the demonstration until the roads are fixed.

They are embarking on the demonstration because they are aware that government officials are in town, especially the new Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Kwaku Asomah-Cheremeh, and her deputy, Mrs Barbara Oteng Gyasi, who hails from the area.
