Support government to develop nation — Senior Minister

The Senior Minister, Mr Yaw Osafo-Maafo, last Tuesday donated GH¢6,000 worth of assorted items and GH¢1,000 to the Good Shepherd Outreach Orphanage at Akwatia in the Eastern for the upkeep of the children.

The items included edible oil, soft drinks, plastic chairs, clothes and stationery.

The Senior Minister was accompanied by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia, Mrs Mercy Ama Sey, and the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Denkyembour, Mr Seth Birikorang.

At the event, Mr Osafo-Maafo said the donation was in response to an appeal made by the MP regarding the worsening plight of children at the orphanage and he promised to make regular donations to the home.

Education

He urged parents and guardians in Akwatia to enrol their children of school age in basic schools in the town in order for them to benefit from the free senior high school (SHS) programme initiated by the government.

He advised the management of the orphanage to instill good morals and discipline in the children, in addition to offering them quality education.

Mr Osafo-Maafo said it was necessary that the people of Akwatia supported the government and the MP, since it was through their assistance that the district could develop at a rapid pace.

He also donated 20 bags of cement to the orphanage to complete a building that was being put up to accommodate the children.

The Proprietor of the orphanage, Madam Asantewaa Agyei, thanked Mr Osafo-Maafo for the donation and appealed to other well-meaning citizens of the district and beyond to assist the home.

She said the home was putting up permanent accommodation that was currently at the lintel level and needed help to get it completed as soon as possible.

Assistance

Madam Agyei asked the Senior Minster, the MP and the DCE to assist an eight-year-old orphan, Charlotte Adutwumwaa, who was born without sex organs and had only one leg.

She said the orphanage had paid for the several surgeries performed on the girl but it was now finding it difficult to foot her medical bills.

Earlier in the day, the Senior Minister and his entourage had joined Muslims in Akwatia to celebrate the Eid-ul-Adha Festival, during which he interacted with the District Chief Imam, Alhaji Adamu Yussif.

Mr Osafo-Maafo congratulated them on a successful Eid and said the government was determined to promote peace and unity and accelerate the nation’s development.

He said roads in Akwatia had been awarded on contract and would soon be tarred.
