Sunyani residents gear up for Xmas
With barely one week to Christmas, residents in Sunyani, the Brong Ahafo Regional capital, are gearing up for the occasion as they make frantic efforts to buy things they will need during the period.
While some traders in the city say sales have gone up slightly, others are yet to get into the Christmas mood during which buyers troop in their numbers to purchase all sorts of items.
Decorative items
What buyers are currently purchasing are decorative items to beautify their homes in preparation for the yuletide.
A visit to a shop at the popular “18” Area at the Sunyani Main Market showed how some residents are leaving no stone unturned to get the right item to decorate their homes.
One of the buyers, Madam Victoria Ansu who was there with her children, said she needed to buy new toys and all sorts of decorative items “to give my home a new look so that my children will spend the occasion with smiles”.
“Christmas comes only but once in a year and we need to celebrate the occasion to remind us how Christ was born with a mission to save mankind”.
Tailoring shops
A visit to some tailoring and textile shops also showed that sales have inched up slightly. At the Stephen’s Materials Shop, the owner, Mr Stephen Owusu, expressed the hope that sale would go up subsequently.
“People are trickling in but it is my hope that we will witness increased sales in the coming days for us to recoup our investments and make some profits,” he stated.
At a tailoring shop in the Main Market, the Daily Graphic caught up with a middle-aged father, Yaw Nsiah, who had taken his three-year son, Kobby Nsiah, to a shop for a new cloth to be sewn for him.
The tailor, Mr George Odenkey, said business had increased as a result of the approaching Christmas.
“Most people— children, the youth and the aged —are now sewing their attires from Ghana-made textiles instead of wearing imported already sewn dresses”, he stated and added that “we have to work during the night these days to meet the demands of our customers.”
For little Kobby, he might not understand the occasion but his bright face and smiles were an indication that adding one new shirt to his stock during Christmas was worth celebrating.
