Social media 'roars' over Martin Amidu's appointment as Special Prosecutor

The much-awaited naming of the Special Prosecutor, touted as key in the fight against corruption, particularly in the public sector of Ghana, was on Thursday announced by President Akufo-Addo.

To the surprise of many, the one to occupy the position turned out to be Mr Martin Amidu, a well-known anti-corruption campaigner and a strong critic of both the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to which he belongs and the current administration in power, the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Shortly after Mr Amidu’s name was announced by the president, some Ghanaian social media users took to their various platforms to comment on the shocker.

While some were commending the president for the nomination, others were making fun of perceived corrupt officials as they anticipate that Mr Amidu would soon descend many Ghanaians.

The Akufo-Addo led government has been touting the office of the Special Prosecutor, a new portfolio to be created in Ghana, as vital to help fight corruption.
