Residents steal laterite at Odorkor market

Mr Kenneth Asare speaking to journalists during the inspectionAfter weeks of evacuating refuse at the Odorkor Market and filling it with laterite, some residents have started stealing the laterite.
According to some residents, they saw some people in the middle of the night stealing the laterite but have vowed to stop them in order to maintain the new look of the site.

The residents made the complaint when officials of Zoom Alliance toured the site, Agbogbloshie Market, and Musuko dumping site at Kwabenya to inspect progress of work during the one month exercise.

At Agbogbloshie, the residents commended Zoom Alliance and the government for the clean-up exercise to keep the communities and markets clean.

Speaking in an interview with journalists at Agbogbloshie, Elizabeth Ablatudeka, a food seller in the market, expressed delight at the new state of the area, stating that it had improved the condition of the market.

She said the exercise had helped to reduce the house flies that invaded the area and further called for stiffer punishment for people who littered indiscriminately.

The Operations and Technical Manager of Zoom Alliance, Mr Kenneth Asare, said as part of the exercise, refuse containers would be provided in all the areas of the exercise to help discourage people from dumping indiscriminately.

According to Mr Asare, about 28,000 tonnes of refuse have so far been collected but they expect to collect about 50,000 tonnes of refuse at the end of the one-month exercise.
