Police will maintain presence for a week

The Director of Operations of the Ghana Police Service, Mr John Kudalor, has said the service will maintain its presence on the ground for one more week after the Supreme Court’s judgement on the 2012 presidential election petition.
He told the Daily Graphic that the police had planned to stay on the ground for one month but because there was calm, there was no need to stick to that plan.

Mr Kudalor was speaking on strategies by the Police Administration to maintain peace after the Supreme court judgement.

“There was a near confrontation between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) at Nima in Accra but the reaction from the police was swift,” he said, adding, “We were able to foil the confrontation within six minutes.”

Mr Kudalor urged the media to desist from any action that could mar the relative peace the country was enjoying after the judgement and called on Ghanaians to focus on developing the country, since the judgement had now been delivered.

About 30,000 police personnel were deployed nationwide to maintain peace and order on Thursday during the delivery of judgement on the petition in which the 2012 presidential candidate of the NPP, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo; his running mate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and the Chairman of the NPP, Mr Jake Obetsebi-Lamptey, challenged the legitimacy of President John Dramani Mahama, who was declared president following the 2012 general election.
