Police arrest suspect in Dess FM news caster's murder

A 36-year-old carpenter, Philip Akumaning, also known as Atta Panin, has been arrested as the prime suspect in the murder of a newscaster of DESS FM, a community radio station in Bekwai in Ashanti.

Ms Ama Agyeiwaa Kodie, 31 was found dead in a pool of blood in her house at Bekwai around 6pm on Sunday, April 15, 2018.

She died from stab wounds from her assailants and after four months of investigations, the police have announced that they have picked a suspect, reports Daniel Kenu from Kumasi.

DCOP Fred Adu Anning, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander addressing a press conference on the murder on Monday said the deceased, Portia Ama Agyeiwaa, and the suspect were once lovers residing at Kasoa in the central region until the deceased got a job at the FM station in March this year.

Following that, the two moved to Nyameduasi, a suburb of Bekwai where Portia's new job was located.

DCOP Anning said a month later a row ensued between the two and the deceased threatened to end the relationship.

Atta Panin, according to the police got offended and in the process inflicted multiple knife wounds in between the breasts, right thigh and left arm of Portia.

She was later found in a pool of blood, and was pronounced dead at the Bekwai Government Hospital

Following that, Atta Panin bolted to Assin Fosu where he hails from in the Central region and stayed there temporarily before moving to Accra.

Arrest

The suspect, however, resurfaced at Juaso in the Ashanti Region during a funeral and was arrested at a nearby town, Juansa near Konongo following a tip-off.

Atta Panin subsequently led the police to his hideout at Assin Fosu where the knife he allegedly used in the killing of the lady was retrieved.

He was arraigned earlier on Monday and has since been remanded.
