Nigerian High Commission raises funds for charity

The Nigerian High Commission has organised social activities and fun games to raise funds to support orphanages and prisons in the country.

Known as the Charity Bazaar, the programme was part of activities marking the 58th independence anniversary of Nigeria.

It brought together about 20 Nigerian exhibitors, who showcased items such as clothes, beads, furniture, agro-chemicals and indigenous food.

The event, the first of its kind, attracted diplomats from India, China, Turkey, Palestine, Niger, Burkina Faso and Gabon to commemorate the anniversary, which falls on October 1.

The Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Ambassador Olufemi Michael Abikoye, in a media briefing, indicated that the event was in line with the vision of the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, to assist the less-privileged in society.

“Our President gave instructions to all his ambassadors to support the welfare of people and that is what we are doing today. This is part of our Nigerian citizen diplomacy,” he said.

The charity bazaar was organised in collaboration with the Nigerian Women Association (NWA) and it was used to display the rich Nigerian culture manifested in food, dance and music.

Ambassador Abikoye said giving back to society was the mandate of the High Commission to ensure that it rendered justice to the land which had provided home for them.

Independence

He explained that the event was important for Nigerians from all walks of life to come together and celebrate their country and, more especially, reflect on the hard work and toil of their forefathers.

“We are calling on Nigerians from all walks of life to join us to celebrate our dear nation and our freedom,” Mr Abikoye stated.

The wife of the Nigerian High Commissioner, Mrs Margaret Abikoye, said funds raised from the bazaar would be channeled to assist the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, the 37 Military Hospital, the Osu Children’s Home and the Nsawam Prison.

“We are also willing to present some donation to the Rebecca Foundation, led by the First Lady, Mrs Rebecca Akufo-Addo,” she said.
