NCCE works on national cohesion, stability

Madam Charlotte Osei, NCCE BossThe National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has embarked on an intensive public engagement programme to prepare Ghanaians to accept the outcome of the 2012 election petition, regardless of their political affiliations.

The commission has, therefore, advised Ghanaians and everyone resident in Ghana to respect the law and live up to their responsibilities.

In a statement to the Daily Graphic, the NCCE said “as citizens of Ghana, the need to uphold and defend the Constitution and the duty to foster national unity and live in harmony with others is imperative.”

According to the NCCE, activities lined up include community durbars and engagements; focus group discussions with various stakeholders; TV and radio discussions; engagement with youth groups and political party youth activists; and roundtable discussions at the national and regional levels with various national institutions and groups.

Key stakeholders in the national exercise, the statement pointed out, are: The National Peace Council,  National Media Commission, Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association, Ghana Journalists Association and the Christian Council of Ghana.

Others are: The Catholic Bishops’ Conference, Ahmadiyya Muslim Mission, Federation of Muslim Councils, Office of the National Chief Imam, security services,  National Council of Christian Charismatic Churches, Ghana Trades Union Congress, National House of Chiefs and several other institutions and associations.

According to the NCCE statement, the target group include: Communities across the nation, faith-based organisations, political parties, political party youth activists, women's groups and people with disabilities.

To make the exercise successful, the NCCE called on all political parties, particularly the parties involved in the petition before the Supreme Court, to engage their members and supporters and work towards promoting peace in Ghana, political tolerance and peacefully accepting the Supreme Court’s verdict.

The NCCE also urged all Ghanaians to work actively within their circles to promote national cohesion, the growth and stability of our democracy and nation.

The commission further urged all Ghanaians to peacefully accept any verdict by the Supreme Court on the presidential election petition and respect the security agencies and state institutions.

The commission also called on all Ghanaians to be particularly considerate in their utterances and ensure that their actions as well as speech were restrained. They should also promote peaceful co-existence in the supreme interest of the nation.
