National Security protects Ayamfuri Forest

National Security operatives have started guarding the Ayamfuri Forest in the Upper Denkyira West District in the Central Region to prevent the natural reserve from being destroyed by illegal miners (galamsey operators).

The action by the National Security follows a Daily Graphic publication of Tuesday, October 27, 2015, that alerted the authorities to the wanton destruction of the forest by the galamsey operators.

The National Security has now dispatched a team of operatives to the forest to protect it from further degradation.

The youth, numbering about 1,000, had invaded the forest reserve and destroyed some trees to pave the way for their galamsey activities.

When the Daily Graphic visited the Ayamfuri community last Saturday, December 5, 2015, the security operatives had arrived there and had given a three-day ultimatum to the galamsey operators to collect their equipment from the forest, after which they condoned off the area and put it under a 24-hour guard.

During the visit, many of the residents were seen going about their legitimate farming activities without any hindrance.

Some of the youth, however, who were not happy about the decision to protect the forest, accused the government of depriving them of their livelihood.

The youth claimed that the high unemployment rate in the area had compelled them to engage in certain activities, including galamsey, to make a living.

They also blamed the Perseus Company, a mining company operating in the area, whose concession was being degraded, of failing to offer them jobs as promised but the company has denied that claim.
