National House of Chiefs commends Ghanaians for keeping peace

The National House of Chiefs (NHC) has commended the Supreme Court Justices for their professionalism in the administration of Justice in the 2012 election petition brought before it.

The house also congratulated President John Dramani Mahama on the affirmation of his election victory by the Supreme Court as being valid.

In a statement signed and issued in Kumasi by the Vice President of the NHC,  Awulae Attibrukusu III, who is also the chief of Lower Axim, the NHC also commended  Nana Addo Danquah Akufo Addo for using the legal process available to seek redress in the 2012 election.

The house commended both the petitioners and the respondents for accepting the judgement of the Supreme Court for the country to move on, adding that the country was the winner.

According to the statement, the acceptance of the judgement by all parties had entrenched rule of law, deepened the nation’s democracy and had once again proved to the international community that “when it comes to democracy in Africa, Ghana is second to none.”

It said: “We have shown that in all our endeavours Ghana is paramount and in whatever we do we consider the interest of Ghana first”.

The house also commended the President for extending an olive branch to the opposition to come on board to work for the achievement of the better Ghana Agenda.

“With the dispute over, the house urges the government to put in place programmes and policies to solve the issues confronting us as a nation, forge ahead in unity and deepen our commitment to finding solutions to the numerous challenges facing us as a country”.

The statement commended the media, the security services, religious leaders and indeed all Ghanaians for their commitment to peace, adding that the pronouncement by the police that there was no incident recorded during the period was reassuring and that Ghanaians should continue to demonstrate same patriotic virtues for the sustenance of peace in the country.

The house urged all to put the election petition behind us and work towards the development of the nation for the citizenry to have better living conditions and peace for all.
