The project, to be financed from the $3 billion China Development Bank (CBD) facility, is expected to ease congestion on the 19-kilometre stretch and improve the movement of goods and services.

A Deputy Minister of Information and Media Relations, Mr Felix Ofosu Kwakye, told journalists at a media briefing yesterday that the expansion of the motorway was one of the critical road projects that the government would be pursuing.

He said the government would initiate the process to select a competent entity that would undertake the rehabilitation and expansion of the motorway.

Other projects

Mr Ofosu Kwakye also said plans to construct a new bridge over the Lower Volta was on course, and that a barge which would ferry people across the lake when the bridge was closed for rehabilitation works, was being built in The Netherlands.

That was reason why the project would commence next year since by then the barge would have been completed and brought into the country.

Greater Accra

On road projects in the Greater Accra Region, Mr Ofosu Kwakye said work on the Giffard, Burma Camp, Awoshie-Pokuase, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange and the Spintex roads had all reached advanced stages of completion.

He mentioned others that had reached the same level of completion as the Tetteh-Quarshie-Madina, Achimota-Ofankor, Madina-Pantang, Ashongman-Haatso-Agbogba, Gulf House Link and the Ashaiman-Oyibi road projects.

Eastern Region

In the Eastern Region, the deputy minister said the Anyinam-Konongo-Nkawkaw Bypass was almost complete, while the Koforidua-Bunso and the Nsawam-Aburi road projects were ongoing.

Volta Region

On road projects in the Volta Region, Mr Ofosu Kwakye said the Dode-Papaso-Nkwanta and the Nkwanta-Oti-Damanko portion of the Eastern Corridor road projects were progressing steadily.

The Hohoe town roads had been completed, while the Ho-Fume, Kpando-Dambai-Worawora, Golokwati-Hohoe road projects were nearing completion, he added.

Northern Region

In the Northern Region, Mr Ofosu Kwakye said the Buipe-Tamale road was 75 per cent complete; the Fulso-Sawla road was progressing steadily, while work on the Tamale-Salaga and Tamale-Kumbungu projects were far advanced.

Mr Ofosu Kwakye also said similar road projects were going on in other parts of the country and added that the government was making strenuous efforts to address challenges in the roads sector.
