Minister’s appeal falls on deaf ears

The Jaman North District Assembly,  has voted to reject the President’s nominee for the area. Hajia Amina Amadu did not get the nod at an emergency meeting to confirm her on Tuesday, at Sampa, the district capital.

Twenty- two out of the 38 assembly members voted to reject Hajia Amadu, who had been renominated by the President as the DCE for Jaman North, to serve for a second term while 16  voted to retain her in office

Hajia Amadu needed to have secured 26 votes which represented the two- thirds majority of votes of the assembly members present to become the DCE but they failed to endorse her for the position.

The nominee has another chance after 10 days for the assembly members to confirm her for the position.

Mr Aidoo, who was accompanied by his deputy, Mr Justice Samuel Adjei, and some regional party  executive of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by the chairman, Mr. Opoku  Attuahene, appealed to the assembly members to vote and endorse the President’s nominee for the sake of peace and development in the district, but they failed to do so.

The Brong Ahafo Regional Minister said the assembly concept was aimed at bringing good governance and development to the doorsteps of the people and therefore, that should be the pre-occupation of the assembly members rather than to let their parochial interest overshadown over the former.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP), Member of Parliament (MP) for Jaman North, Mr Siaka Stevens, who was present and addressed the meeting, said since the  assembly members had failed to confirm the President’s nominee for the position of DCE for the area, he was optimistic that he would be their representative for the next 12 years in Parliament.

The NDC lost the Jaman North parliamentary seat to the NPP which has since  held the position but in the 2012 general elections the President won in the area by over 4,000 votes.
