Islamic Girls SHS jubilate over new water project
The Islamic Girls Senior High School at Suhum in the Eastern Region is the latest to benefit from a €12,600 potable mechanized water project donated by the Kuwait based non-governmental organization, DirectAid Ghana Society.
The NGO on Friday handed over the water project, an electric pump-fitted deep borehole with a 15,000 litres capacity dual polytank reservoir and a 7.5kv generator to provide uninterrupted water for the school even in times of power outages.

It is 100 metres deep and has 12 pipe outlets to ensure there is no queuing for water and save the students time for studies.
Show of gratitude
The students, teachers and school authorities could not hide their joys as they sang the praises of DirectAid, saying their most difficult challenge in the school was effectively over.
Student after student told of how the daily search for water, especially during power outages, had negatively reduced crucial time for academic endeavours.
Mr. Benjami Orrison Akrono, English tutor and examinations coordinator of the school who received the keys to the project on behalf of school authorities, told Graphic Online that “As far as water is concerned in the school, in the years past most at times the students don get water here on campus and they have to cross over the Kumasi – Accra highway in front of the school to go fetch water outside.
He called DirectAid’s intervention as a blessing for the school, saying no longer would students traverse the dangerous highway for water. He also expects lateness to classes to reduce drastically.
“On behalf of Management we thank DirectAid Ghana for this wonderful project and may Allah bless them in abundance”, he said.
Home Economics student, Rose Ofori, was all praise for the donation, saying water shortage in the school is rampant and that students have sometimes had to attend classes without taking their bath because there was no water. Another student, Heidi Janet thanked DirectAid and invited them to do more for the school and others in need.
Similarly, Ismail Zuleiha also a student, expressed profound gratitude and invited her colleague students to join her as they rendered an Arabic song to thank their benefactors.
The representative of the Moslem community at the school, Umar Ahmed thanked Allah that the perennial water shortage on campus was over, saying the situation was unbearable when there were power outages, a situation he said were rampant.
Promise to do more
The Country Director of DirectAid Ghana, Sami Henedak Ahmed Mohammed was equally happy for the show of appreciation for the water project and vowed the NGO’s continued support for school, saying “Your happiness is our motivation and we will help you in any way we can.”
He said DirectAid Ghana has been around since 1988 and been involved in the provision of potable water, in the fields of education and health, provision of relief items and providing developmental interventions.
DirectAid Ghana in October similarly handed over a water project at the same cost to the James Camp Prison in Accra.
