Heavy rains destroy houses in Kpando

Over 250 residents were rendered homeless following a wild rainstorm that hit Kpando in the Volta region on Sunday.

The downpour which lasted for close to three hours, left one person injured caused destruction to property worth thousands of Ghana cedis.

Roofs of 55 houses, schools and churches were ripped off, displacing the victims.

The injured person is currently receiving medical treatment  at the Margret Marquart Catholic Hospital.

Speaking to Graphic Online, the Member of Parliament for Kpando, Mrs. Della Sowah said the rain which started around 2 pm till 5pm has displaced many people in the area.

She added that the affected persons were stranded and helpless, while others are leaving with their relatives and friends.

She called on government and other benevolent organizations to assist reroof the houses and build the collapsed ones.

The MP earlier with the Municipal Chief Executive of Kpando, Mr. Elvis Gyampo visited the affected areas affected to empathise with them. 

 Mr.  Gyampo named communities heavily affected as Fesi, Gadza, Dafor and KpandoTorkor.

He said he is coordinating with the NADMO and the MP of the area to being relief to the people.

He said NADMO had marked other structures which could be affected should there be another downpour.

He added that they will be carrying out educational campaigns to sensitize the people on what people need to do in case of another downpour.
