Members of the governing council are Mr Berifi Apenteng (Chairman), Mr Eric Atieku (Government Nominee), Ms Rosemary Ardayfio (Government Nominee), Mr David Newton (Rector) and Mr P.K. Krampa (Ministry of Education).

Others are Mr Tim Quarshigah (Academic Board), Mr Ransford Tetteh (Representative of the media), Mr Kodwo Jonas Anson Boateng (Convocation), Dr Wilberforce Sefakor Dzisah (GIJ Alumni) and Mr Noel Nutsugah (SRC President/ Ghana Institute of Journalism)

The members took the oath of allegiance as required by law.

Inaugurating the council, the Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Tertiary Institutions, Mr Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, called on the council to maintain the good reputation of the institute and abide by its mandate as the premier communication school in the country.

Mr Ablakwa said the new board was formed because “the GIJ was now fully entrenched with the Ministry of Education having become a tertiary training institution, offering excellence in journalism and mass communications and also requiring more assistance to qualify and benefit from the Ghana Education Trust Fund.”

Uphold good image

He urged them to uphold the good image of the institution to continue training journalists and public relations officers for the country.

“We urge the governing council of the Ghana Institute of Journalism to ensure the reason for the establishment of the institute is realised and that they carry out the oversight and responsibilities and ensure that it is abiding by its mandate to facilitate efficiency and running of the institute,” he said.

Mr Ablakwa stated the government’s commitment to provide funding to assist the institute to move to its new site at Okponglo in Accra to facilitate an increase in enrolment from 600 to 1,000.

Premier school

Speaking on behalf of the governing council, the Chairman of the Council, Mr Apenteng, said members were going to do their best to uphold the confidence vested in them by the President.

“We will do everything in our power that the confidence reposed in us would be actualised in what the President wants us to do. We see this as a challenge because the industry the institute serves is the fastest growing sector in the country.”

Mr Apenteng said that it was crystal clear that the GIJ was the premier journalism institution in the country although there were other institutions offering the same courses as the institute.

He urged other members of the council to ensure that the institute remained the best in the country by living up to its billing.
