The launch of a new specialised unit to combat robberies is one of the news highlights of the fifth programme of ‘Ghana Police Watch’.

Personnel in the specialised Motorbike Unit have been trained in high-risk crime prevention tactics - the latest police response to the increase in robberies committed by motor cyclists.

This is good news for all, especially when there is renewed determination within the service to ensure that this special unit is effective in combating the dangers posed by criminals.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante-Apeatu, issued a strong warning to the effect that the police service would implement this strategy to the letter to clamp down on the activities of criminals.

“The police no longer sits and waits for crime to be reported for action to be taken, neither does it rely on the traditional crime prevention and detection methodologies. Let me sound a word of caution, especially to those who are in the habit of using motorbikes to commit crimes. The few of you cannot take all of us hostage. This new squad, supported by other operation teams, is poised and will not be kind to you when you are caught in the act,” he said.

The specially trained unit made up of 70 police officers has been operating in some communities in Accra to ensure safer neighbourhoods and plans are ongoing to extend this crime-prevention initiative to other parts of the country.

Programme

Programme five also includes a report on the success of the police in breaking up a car snatching syndicate operating across the country and how to protect oneself against the latest tactics by criminals to rob people of their car by spiking one’s drink. A caution is never to take a drink from a stranger.

Hosted by Israel Laryea, a broadcaster, Ghana Police Watch also brings you the story of Nana Kweku Ofori Atta, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Avcontec Ltd, who has donated closed circuit television cameras (CCTV) to five police stations in Accra.

His gesture follows a positive trend among private citizens to help equip the police and increase their capacity to combat crime. Ghana Police Watch will bring you more news on this encouraging trend and appeals to all citizens to help the police to effectively combat crime since their mandate is also a shared responsibility for all.

Discussion

The discussion segment of Ghana Police Watch focused on the work of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service. The discussion featured DCOP Mrs Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, Director-General, Crime Investigations Department (CID) and Mr Adam Bonaah, a security analyst.

The topics discussed range from the importance of increasing the capacity of the police to effectively investigate cases and ongoing progress on e-policng, the project to transform police operations and procedures through technology.

Ghana Police Watch is showing on all the major television networks in Ghana. It can now be viewed every day of the week. The series is about to be broadcast on regional TV stations, starting with Coastal TV in the Central Region on Wednesdays at 8 p.m and repeated on Fridays at 11 a.m.
