Student compelled to end education following loss of eyesight

Ms Adelaide Naa Borley Bortier Afutu, who was in her final year at the Ghanata Senior High School (SHS) in Dodowa in 2013, was compelled to truncate her education due to the contraction of cerebro-spinal meningitis (CSM) that eventually led to the loss of her eyesight.

Since then, the young lady has been battling with her condition because she is unable to meet the rising cost of treatment and other medical expenses, making any hope of her regaining her sight fade away.

Ms Afutu’s parents have exhausted their finances in trying to find a remedy to their promising daughter’s deteriorating situation.

Appeal

It is for this reason that members of the Ghanata Old Students Association (GOSA) are appealing to the public to help the young lady from her predicament.

The appeal was made after the old students had visited Ms Afutu at her residence at Kanewu, near Adjei Kodjo, a suburb of Ashaiman in the Greater Accra Region.

The group presented cash and some items to her and appealed to corporate institutions and well-meaning Ghanaians to support her to realise her potential.

Speaking to the media after the visit, the National President of GOSA, Mr Roosevelt Odai Otoo, said Ms Afutu is talented, especially in music, storytelling and poetry.

He said since she lost her sight, her parents had been organising training for her at home to develop career opportunities.

“Considering the challenges Ms Afutu and her parents are facing, we would like to make a passionate appeal to members, the management of the school and the public to go to her aid for her medical upkeep and career support,” Mr Otoo said.
