Over 250 Commissioners are expected to attend this meeting, the 24th session since the change from Synod to General Assembly.

It will be the first meeting to be moderated by the Moderator, Rt Rev. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, after his election to the high office last year to lead the Church.

Rt Rev Opare Kwakye was elected the 19th Moderator of the General Assembly at last year’s meeting to succeed Rt Rev. Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, who served his full tenure.

The moderator will fully assume the role and chair proceedings.

The Clerk of the General Assembly, Rev. Dr Godwin Nii Noi Odonkor, in an interview with the Daily Graphic, said all was set for the meeting since August 1, when the ministers  began preparations for the important event

He said the theme for this year’s General Assembly was: “Celebrating our heritage; persisting in missions”, explaining that this would also be the theme for the Church for the next ecclesiastical year.

Rev. Dr Odonkor also explained that the General Assembly would be a period for the ministers to reflect on the work done since the last meeting and also plan for the future.

“The General Assembly as has always been the case, will be a time for us to reflect on activities and mission of the work that God has assigned the Church to consider, and learn God’s will and purpose for the Church for the new year and the future,” he stated.

Also, during the meeting, the moderator will share his vision in his address and give a charge for the Church for the next year while the clerk gives a state of the Church report.

Among other things, the Moderator will launch the Kuntunse Project as well as the Agenda two million initiative, intended to set up the drive to win more souls for Christ and increase the membership of the PCG.

Again at this year’s General Assembly, a new Clerk of the General Assembly will be elected, as Rev Dr Odonkor ends his full tenure in December.

Political season

As part of the programme line up for the 24th General Assembly, the flag bearers of the two main political parties, Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been invited to attend as special guests.

The leaders will be given an opportunity to share their messages and plans with the General Assembly ahead of the general election in December.
