Humphrey Asigbe wins Ghana Library Year of Reading Logo Hackathon campaign

Twenty-six year old Humphrey Asigbe has emerged the winner of Ghana Library Authority’s (GhLA) Year of Reading Logo Hackathon held at the Accra Central Library.

The 2019 Year of Reading campaign was sponsored by GhLA on the theme “Reading for Progress”.

The logo hackathon is a prelude to the official launch of the year-long reading campaign by the GhLA, aimed at helping different stakeholders to promote leisure reading, acquisition of knowledge, and life-long learning lifestyles among Ghanaians.

Out of hundreds of applicants, only nine were shortlisted to compete and after an initial interactive discussions and a workshop facilitated by world class design experts, the finalists were given some hours to design the logo, with Humphrey Asigbe emerging winner.

Commenting on the award, Mr. Asigbe said the hackathon challenge was a great move by GhLA as it has also opened doors for young entrepreneurs and graphic designers like himself to demonstrate their talents.

He said he got his inspiration from the concepts of reading and independence. “I envisioned children reading and used that concept to create a logo that easily conveys the central message of reading to everyone both young and old”, he added.

Humphrey was awarded a $100 cash prize and is to undertake an internship with GhLA.

Speaking at the event, Ag. Chief Executive Director of GhLA, Hayford Siaw said he was ecited about the initiative.

 “I feel excited about the adoption of this innovative practice by a public library on the continent of Africa to engage with its stakeholders to design a logo that is truly representative of the Year of Reading and the theme, Reading for Progress. Management believes, there are a lot of talents in Ghana that are available to support national development and the platform just needs to be created for them to be involved, hence the hackathon challenge for promising graphic designers to come and display their skills”, he said.

The winning logo depicts three readers with each holding tools of knowledge acquisition and is a representation of the changing phases of reading - from old to new ways of reading.
