8 Arrested for alleged car snatching, robbery

Eight persons have been arrested for their alleged involvement in various criminal acts, including car snatching and robbery.

The police have named the eight as Amid Haruna, 19; Emmanuel Amaning, 20; Evans Kwamena Nyarko, 21; Frank Attah Kwame Agyekum, 22; Alex Danso, 24; Solomon Aidoo, 28; Kwasi Nkrumah, aka Obour, 38, and Charles Oduro, 42.

Two of them — Nkrumah and Oduro — are ex-convicts who had been on the wanted list of the police for sometime.
While five out of the eight were arrested in connection with vehicle snatching, the rest are in the grip of the police for robbery.

Robbery

Briefing journalists, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Fredrick Adu Anim, said Amaning, Agyekum and Nyarko, conspired and embarked on robbery sprees at various locations within the Accra metropolis.

During one of the robberies, he said, the three suspects and one of their accomplices, identified as Kofi Adwoumor, who is currently at large, armed themselves with a pistol, a machete, a dagger and a long screw driver and attacked a man in his house at Haatso.

They robbed the victim of an HP laptop computer, valued at GH¢1,800, two Samsung mobile phones worth GH¢1,100, and threatened to kill him if he failed to hand over all his money and valuable possessions.

DCOP Adu Anim said the victim’s cry for help attracted his neighbours, leading the suspects to take to their heels.

“But luck eluded Amaning and he was arrested after a hot chase, even though his accomplices managed to escape and went to seek refuge at Nkawkaw,” he said.

During their stay at Nkawkaw, DCOP Adu Anim said, Agyekum and Nyarko embarked on another robbery in the town but were arrested by the police in the area.

The Accra Regional Police Command Intelligence Unit, upon receiving the information about the arrest of the suspects, brought them to Accra to assist with investigations.

Stolen vehicle

On October 10, 2019, DCOP Adu Anim said the command received information about some ex-convicts who were in possession of a Toyota Corolla S vehicle with a fake registration number, GT 4041-16, embossed on it.

The vehicle, which was suspected to have been stolen, was being offered for sale by the suspects.

Police feigned interest in the car leading to the arrest of Nkrumah and Oduro who mentioned Danso as the man who usually bought the stolen vehicles from them.

They admitted to having stolen 15 vehicles from different locations, and when Danso was arrested at Awoshie in Accra, the police found two Toyota Corolla vehicles, a Hyundai Sonata and a Pajero, all suspected to have been stolen.

On October 12, 2019, the Command, DCOP Adu Anim said, received information about a group of suspected robbers who had allegedly snatched a Hyundai Grace Bus with registration No. GR 4920-19 and were hiding it at Ablekuma Fan Milk in Accra.

The suspects, who were said to have misplaced the ignition key to the vehicle, did not know the police had mounted surveillance on them.

They were arrested when Aidoo and Haruna showed up to move the vehicle without the ignition key.
