10 Mobile composting, 150 recycling plants in the offing - Zoomlion
A waste management company, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, is set to establish 10 mobile composting and recycling plants and 150 plastic recycling factories at different locations across the country this year.
Five of the composting plants are almost ready and will start operating by the end of January 2019.
The move is to enable the country to deal effectively with its waste management challenges and also in line with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo's vision of making Ghana clean and Accra the cleanest city in Africa by the end of 2020.
The Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Mr Joseph Siaw Agyepong, made this known at the group's annual leadership conference at Gomoa Fetteh, near Kasoa, in the Central Region yesterday.
Leadership conference
The five-day annual conference, which began last Monday, is on the theme: "Transform to better perform."
It is being attended by more than 1000 participants, including board members, executives, managing directors, general managers and supervisors from all 10 regions and districts in the country.
A total of 17 speakers are addressing the conference.
They include the Managing Director of the Zenith Bank, Mr Henry Oroh; renowned evangelist, Dr Lawrence Tetteh; Director-General of the Police Professional Standards Bureau, COP Nathan Kofi Boakye, and International Speaker and General Overseer of Daystar Ministries, Rev. Dr Sam Adeyemi, as well as the Group Executive of Hollard Ghana, Mrs Patience Akyianu.
Explaining the theme, Mr Agyepong said: "Our constructive discussion here, as you are all aware, is to help us challenge ourselves to be abreast of new trends in the sectors that we operate in as a group.
This has become necessary because it is imperative that we become transformational in our activities after 13 years of existence as a group.”
Fighting filth
According to Mr Agyepong, other projects lined up to support the President's vision included a liquid waste treatment plant in Kumasi, in partnership with Pureco Limited of Hungary, a dustbin manufacturing plant (also in Kumasi) and a nationwide million bin distribution project.
He said Zoomlion’s unending effort to ensure that Ghana solved its waste problems was manifest in its establishment of the Accra Compost and Recycling Plant (ACARP), the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant, which would employ about 500 people, and the Teshie and Achimota Transfer Stations, among other facilities.
“Efforts are being made to replicate this in all the regions of Ghana using the mobile compost technology.
As I speak to you, one is being installed at Jamestown in Accra. We believe we are capable of solving waste problems. In other words, Ghana can best be developed by Ghanaians, not foreigners. This fact is incontestable.
This shows that if Ghanaian investors and companies are given all the push, they will be empowered to go all out to grow the economy and create more jobs, and Ghanaians will be the ultimate beneficiaries,” he stated.
Rise up
Speaking on the topic “Rise up and be counted”, Rev. Adeyemi told the Jospong leadership that it was only total commitment that would make them realise their goals.
“If we believe in keeping the environment clean, then we have to give it all we have. Only committed people will get the job done,” he said.
Explaining that to rise up and be counted meant to take a stand with strong conviction, he stated that “those who don’t make up their minds are like wheelbarrows. They go as far as others push them,” adding “indecision breeds failure.”
