GES trains 200 Science, Maths teachers in ICT
The first batch of 200 Mathematics and Science teachers selected from 100 basic schools across the country have been trained in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to upgrade their knowledge and build their capacities in the teaching of the subjects.
The teachers were trained by 50 teacher trainees who had earlier received similar training in ICT.
As part of the training, they were taken through practical knowledge in robotics, computer programming and data logging.
The initiative is under the Basic Science Technology Engineering Mathematics programme (B-STEM), a flagship programme of the Ministry of Education in line with the government’s promise to introduce technology and engineering into the basic education curriculum.
It was facilitated by Itec Global, a scholarly group based in the United Kingdom.
Each of the 100 selected schools was provided with B-STEM kits to be used in their various schools during practical lessons.
At the closing ceremony of the two-week programme held at the Opoku Ware Senior High School (OWASS) in Kumasi, the acting Director, Secondary Education Division, Ghana Education Service (GES), Dr (Mrs) Angela Tena Mensah, reiterated the enormous role science and mathematics continued to play in nation building.
She said as a result, there was the need to initiate such demand-driven programmes for Maths and Science teachers.
Mrs Mensah said a second batch of 600 teachers were to benefit from the programme in the coming month, and that the GES intended to reach all Maths and Science teachers across all the basic schools in the country.
Dr (Mrs) Mensah seized the opportunity to commend authorities of the host school, OWASS, for providing a conducive teaching and learning environment during the two-week programme.
For his part, the Country Director for Itec Global, Mr Douglas Arthur Mensah, said the training of teachers and delivery of B-STEM kits to Junior High School (JHSs) was very key to the teaching and learning of the subject.
He said the beneficiaries had been equipped with the knowledge to deliver investigative and stimulating lessons to promote critical thinking and problem solving skills amongst students and pupils.
