Four die as Yutong bus plunges into river

Four passengers died and others sustained various degrees of injury when a Yutong bus plunged into the Pomponi River, near Hwerewase Mpamprom in the Adansi North District, on Sunday evening while it was raining.

All the dead were females; two of them died on the spot, while two died later at the New Edubiase Hospital.

The accident occurred on the newly constructed asphalt portion of the Kumasi-Takoradi road at about 6.30 p.m.

A police source  told the Daily Graphic yesterday that 35 people, including the driver and his mate, were on board the vehicle, with registration number GC 5062 Z.

According to the source, one of the deceased persons had been identified as Mandy Oko. She was identified by her relatives.

The remains of the victims have been deposited at the morgue at the New Edubiase Government Hospital.

The driver of the bus, whose name was given as Francis Okai, 50, was among those injured.

He was said to have indicated that visibility was very poor as a result of the rains. However, an eyewitness said the vehicle was at top speed.

Consequently, he lost control of the vehicle before it hit an embankment and plunged into the river.

The eyewitness, who also spoke to the Daily Graphic from New Edubiase, stated that personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service at New Edubiase were called in when the accident happened.

Before the Fire Service personnel could reach the accident spot, he said, some of the passengers had managed to come out of the wreckage, while the rest were rescued by the fire personnel.

The source said minutes after the accident, an articulated truck, with registration number AS 4263 C, also ran into the bush injuring the driver when it got to the spot where the accident involving the Yutong bus had occurred.
