#FIXTHECOUNTRY demonstration underway in Accra

The #FIXTHECOUNTRY protesters have hit the streets of Accra demanding better standards of living and good governance in Ghana.

Some protestors had already gathered at the Obra Spot near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle to commence the march as at 6 am on Wednesday (August 4, 2021).

The group who were clad in red also raised concerns over the levels of corruption and under-development in the country as well as high-levels of unemployment.

The protest according to the group, is also to put pressure on the government to address the country’s developmental needs.

The group, made up of mainly the youth and social media activists were holding placards with inscriptions such as “The youth are the future not old men”, “No to nepotism”, “family and friends governance”, “How far with the Woyome case”, “Galamsey is unpatriotic behaviour”, and “bring back La General Hospital”.

The protest started from Kwame Nkrumah Avenue towards Farisco Traffic Lights through TUC Traffic Intersection to EOCO and is expected to end at the Black Star Square.

The August 4 date was arrived at after an Accra High Court dismissed an application by the police seeking to injunct the protest, using COVI-19 restrictions as an excuse.

The Inspector General of Police, Dr George Akuffo Dampare on Monday assured the group of police protection throughout the march.

The IGP and other Police Chiefs also went through the agreed routes with the group.

“The meeting was held at the request of the newly appointed IGP. According to him, his reason for calling the meeting was to assure us of maximum protection from the start to the end of the August 4 #FixTheCountry protest,” the group said in a statement Monday.

"We went over the routes earmarked for the protest from Obra spot (Circle) — Farisco Left — TUC — Kinbu Senior High School – Centre for National Culture – to Independence Square. We also explained that we have recruited and trained marshals who will be assigned to liaise with police on anything and to guide the crowd. On COVID-19 protocols, the marshals will be in charge of making sure everybody wears their masks and maintaining distance".
