Excellence award for persons with disability

The Minister of Chieftaincy and Traditional Affairs, Dr Henry Seidu Daanaa, has advised people living with disability to lead lives that will leave a positive impression on the people they interact with.

He said it was important that the older ones also mentored the younger persons to excel in every endeavour.

Speaking at the launch of the maiden edition of an Excellence Awards for Persons with Disability in Accra on Monday, Dr Daanaa, who is the first visually impaired person to be called to the Bar in Ghana, observed that people living with disability faced a lot of challenges in the country.

The awards are jointly organised by the Emperor Gaza International Foundation (EGIF), a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in partnership with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) and Just Care Foundation Ghana, another NGO.

Dr Daanaa said Ghanaians owed it a duty to themselves to appreciate the little that PLWD had contributed

He, therefore, urged the public to treat people living with disability equally.

The President of the EGIF Foundation, Mr Prince Charles Sackeyfio, said “People with disabilities continue to encounter various types of barriers in our society that make it impossible for PLWD to have equal opportunities.”

The Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Joseph Yammin, said the government was working with international organisations to eliminate issues of discrimination in international disabled sports competitions.
